Days Out In London - Some Thoughts

London, with a population of nearly 8,000,000, is the largest city in Europe. The city, aside from the West End, itself, where most of the attractions are located, is a huge conglomeration of districts, which can be disorienting for the first time visitor. To get your bearings, so to speak, you might like to take - weather permitting, of course - an open top bus tour, or a cruise on the River Thames, to familiarise yourself with the main landmarks, and their relation to each other. You can catch a bus at over 90 different locations around London, and embark, or disembark, at will. Indeed, some bus operators also include a free boat trip on the Thames, and an activity pack for children, in the price of a single ticket.

London Attractions

The traditional sightseeing attractions of London - Westminster Abbey and Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul`s Cathedral, etc. - continue to attract millions of visitors each year, and are, nowadays, complemented by a whole bevy of more recent attractions, such as the London Eye, the largest Ferris wheel in the world. Other attractions, such as Madame Tussauds and London Zoo, at Regents Park , similarly maintain their popularity with older and younger visitors alike, and even some of those not normally considered interesting to youngsters - the Royal Botanical Gardens, at Kew, for instance - stage activities especially for children during the school holidays. The West End, of course, is home to some of the best musical theatre in the world, and you may like to finish your day out by alighting at Piccadilly, or Leicester Square, underground station, for a visit to the Queen`s, or Palace Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue.

Tips for a Successful Day Out

Travelling inevitably involves sitting still, in a fairly confined space, for a reasonable amount of time, and, if you have children, this, in itself, can be problematic. Public transport, by road, or, better still, by rail can offer many advantages for parents. Not only can parents devote 100% of their attention - if, of course, they want to - to their children, but some rail operators offer family carriages, including activity packs, on selected services. It is also worth checking at your local railway stations for any offers and discounts to be had, purely on production of a rail ticket.

The cost of family days out can soon mount up, so check the Internet for any discounts available for booking tickets in advance, or for discount vouchers, or voucher books. These are often available for a nominal fee, or free of charge, and a visit to just one attraction effectively covers the cost of the book. It may also be possible to find discount vouchers for food, shopping and travel around the capital.
